So, with that move now complete, I'm slowly moving all my group blogs to new URLs. Combine that with the latest moves in blogger and I think we need a new neighborhood to play in.

If you read this through an RSS reader, you will need to update the link, and I'm sorry. It's the SEA SOCKS Exclusive Colorways, and if they don't take the wind out of your sails, you're just broken.

I can't show you pictures yet, but what I can do is tell you a little bit more about the patterns you'll be getting.

Sea Weed - a traditional cuff-down sock, with a weedy looking ribbed pattern and done in the colors of the deep sea - you can practically see the weeds waving in the current, and maybe glipse an inky little octopus or other timid creature of the deep hiding in there.

Sea Sick - everything about this is topsy turvy. You'll wave back and forth working two different types of short rows, work a fun and unusual lace, you can even do one from the toe, the other from the cuff, and if all those directional changes don't make you a little green with sea sickness, everyone around you will be green with envy of these gorgeous colors!
(this is one of your class options)

Sea Breeze - drop anchor and relax! In shallow water and sandy colors, this toe-up sock echos waves splashing on the side of the ship and lapping against the shore, and has a cruise-themed cable on the heel flap, perfect for showing off with a pair of clogs.
(this is one of your class options)

The yarn has far surpassed my expectations (and I know Erin, my expectations were pretty high to begin with!!!) and I'm sure it will yours as well. If you don't wish to participate or don't have the time, it is ok.

Now on to the plan:
Abigail has offered to run this swap. I mention this only because I'm up to my little eyeballs in details (and final payments) that I can not. (If you happen to e-mail me, I will forward it on to Miss Abigail.)

The idea is to make a pair of socks for another person in the group. Your pal will not be secret, and the swap will happen sometime early in the cruise (so, hint, you need to be able to finish the pair prior to the cruise).

Anyway, if you are interested, kindly send your name, blog address (if you have one), and e-mail address to Abigail. Also include: fiber allergies, color preference and hated colors, shoe size, foot length, and ball of foot measurements.

Participation is optional and will not reflect on your workshop grades (as if we were giving grades for workshops). Please sign-up only if you can complete the item before the cruise, as I'd hate anyone to be disappointed -- and since this isn't secret (and you will meet face to face everyone in the group) you don't want be the person who showed up with one sock ---- leave that joy to me, please.

Please Proceed To The Highlighted Route

The new site is now live! This blog is as much for you as it is for me to share announcements.

Speaking of Announcements.

I'm all for some surprises, but I know everyone is interested in what classes are being offered. Now, I'm going to share a peak at the classes. Full details will be in your Sea Socks Guide.

There will be two Hands-On techincal classes. You will have the opportunity to take both of them, but the classes must be split up in order to give everyone the personal attention they deserve. They are:
Color Theory and Sock
Pattern Techinique (Choice)
On this one, you can choose between Two Types of Shorts Rows OR Toe Up with a Reverse Heel Flap.

Then there are three classes that are more on theory and ideas of socks:
Customizing Sock Patterns: How to make a standard sock pattern FIT.
Sock Scupture: The Anatomy of a Sock
Handpainted Yarn and the Sock: How to get the best from both

I do hope that's enough of a teaser for you. Trust me, I've heard the topics for each of these and I'm over the moon with how cool they are going to be.

Now for the decision. You see that little thing about you choosing which pattern techinque you want? Well, now is the time to pick -- sorry that this wasn't in your packets. To make this totally fair -- I'm taking class requests by e-mail ONLY (so I have the time/date stamp).

E-mail me if you want to be a part of the Two types of Short Rows Class OR the Toe-Up Reverse Heel Flap. (oh, you want to know what kind of sock goes with each of these?)
1. Two Types of Short Rows: This is a Lace style sock.
2. Toe-Up Reverse Heel Flap: This is a clog sock with a CABLED heel.

So which will it be? All e-mails should be sent directly to seasocks@REMOVETHISgmail.com (remember to remove the "REMOVETHIS" part).

Getting from the Airport to the Pier

I know this is going to sound odd, but are you flying into LA the morning the ship departs? have you thought about how you are getting from the airport to the pier --- trust me, walking is NOT an option.

Well, Royal Caribbean finally (oh, please don't get me started that this took them WAY too long) announced the pricing for one-way cruise only transfers -- da-dum: It is $26.

Call or e-mail me if you need me to add this. My office is filling up with boxes of items for the bags, the bags are ordered and forthcoming, Mama E is up to her elbows in yarn and dye -- seriously, we've been busy!!

I don't have much exciting news to share -- other than to say hi and go over a few housekeeping things.

So, first -- HI!!!!

Now on to the housekeeping:
1. Final payment is due on February 1st. I have spent the last week working on putting together everyone's invoices (yes, this will actually be MAILED and not E-mailed) -- and they are in the box to go out tomorrow. There is an excellent offer in the invoice from Unicorn Books and a questionnaire I need filled out --- so if you don't have an invoice (or aren't the person getting the invoice) in a week -- call me at 888-286-9827 or e-mail me and I'll get you copies out straight away.
2. I have one person who wants to join us, but needs a room mate. I'm fresh out of unmatched roommates, so I thought I'd throw it out there if anyone was willing to take a triple (it will probably lower everyone's per person rate) and add a sweet knitter to their room -- as an incentive, I have a present for the two people willing to add the third. She is seeking non-smokers -- but like the rest of the group, she's a fun loving, sock knitter --- thus she's cool. Please e-mail if you are interested.
3. Has everyone heard that there is going to be an East Coast Fall Fiber Cruise, yet? Yup. There will be a 9 day cruise (roundtrip from Baltimore) in September. This one is geared to spinners and knitters and has 3 days of classes -- Mama E and Amie G will be back as well as Marie from Brooklyn Handspun AND Kate Gilbert (you've heard of her, right?). There's a special offer for anyone booked on Sea Socks already -- but since it is exclusive to you guys, you have to call or e-mail for details.

Ok, that's all I've got. I just checked Amie's ticker on her blog -- 3 months, 3 weeks, and 5 days until we depart. I can't wait. I'm already planning my clothing (read: outfits to match my socks) and dreaming of vacationing with all my newest friends! I can not tell you how exciting it is for me to think about wandering the ship and seeing knitters all around.

In the Better Late than Never Category

Some you, my friends, called months ago wondering why the shore excursions had not been charged for the deposits. Others of you are calling me now and wanting to know why there are odd charges on your card from the 14th. Does it shock anyone that the cause is exactly the same?

In getting the shore excursions and the post cruise packages squared away, I found out that the company (it will show up on your card as Victoria Navigation) never charged the expected deposits (actually did for about 1/4 of the group and not everyone). So, I spent my week trying to help play clean-up in this. Thus, you may see your deposits finally get charged this week.

Please let me know if you see a double charge (one from months ago and one from this week). Also note if you signed up for more than one thing (a shore excursion in Victoria AND a post cruise package) they will be charged in two charges.

There will be NO advanced charges for the Pre-cruise hotel -- that you will pay for when you arrive in LA.

Please e-mail me if you have any questions and forgive this horrible delay.

Motor Coach Transfer to SeaTac Airport: The Update

Hello all.

Here in Sea Socks Central, I've been trying to finalize all the tours and transfers to make sure everything will go perfectly in April.

One of the minor bumps has occured. Due to a lack of bookings the post cruise tour that took the motorcoach to Seattle on 5/4, has been changed. It is now $48 per person and is simply a transfer from the pier to the airport. I have contacted all the affected people via e-mail, but I put it out here, just in case you were thinking about booking it and hadn't called. We need 15 people to keep it the way it was (with the tour in Vancouver) and I have 7 booked thus far. Are there 8 of you who hadn't called yet?

Speaking of which, I am working hard on pulling together the invoices for the final payment which will be due on February 1st. If you haven't added your Victoria Shore Excursion, the pre-hotel stay, or a post cruise transfer and are thinking about doing so, now would be the time to call.

As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call me or just call and chat.

Site Changes

First up, we’ve got some updates to the photo gallery. Vision of The Seas pictures are up in the photo gallery, there’s two galleries for Vision of The Seas, one with all of our pictures on the ship and one dedicated just to the towel animals that our cabin steward would make for us every evening. Oh, the work I've done for the group!!!

First, I've handpicked our wait staff. I found the wait staff to be delightful (which is a shocking understatement considering they welcomed my 3 year old with open arms and catered to his every whim) and when I inquired of the super waiter if he'd be on board in April -- he was thrilled. He was a little taken aback when I also mentioned 90 of my new closest friends with pointy sticks -- but he's warming to the idea. (And no, the wonder waiter will not be the only one serving 90 -- I actually spoke to his Head Waiter and got a commitment that his staff would be taking care of us.) I've also arranged for us to be in a private section of the dining room, so we can be as loud as we want -- but we shall have windows!!!

Secondly, I happened to spend a little time with the Head of Housekeeping on the ship. Here's the good news to share. While I was on the ship they were in the process of upgrading the beds (HELLO, brand new BEDS!!!) and linens. This process seems to also include some new carpet in some staterooms too. The whole upgrade will be done by the time we are onboard.

Thirdly, I may or may not have freaked out the Cruise Director on the ship. He will be onboard at the time too (which have you guessed, was my new favorite question). I casually mentioned that I was bringing a bunch of knitters onboard and next thing I knew I was in his office sharing the details meeting the Heads of various departments.... let me leave it as this: They have been warned.

I'll leave this update with a comment on the ship: I really like her. She's not one of the mega ships, in fact she's SMALL by comparison to Royal Caribbean's line -- but she has a charm that is delightful. And the staff, oh, my the staff. I wanted to take about 4 of them home with me! As I wandered the decks, I could see places for knitters to congregate all over the ship.

So, I hope everyone can feel my excitement for this trip --- we literally said, "I see knitters here." for 7 straight days. While we have a lot of great tips and things to keep in mind, the bottom line is that if you have accessiblity issues talk to your travel agent (us) and let the work with you to put together a cruise that will be able to accomodate your needs.
In addition by letting your travel agent know just what your needs will be, they (read: us) can make sure that the cruise line is ready for you when you arrive from embarkation. That includes reserving an accesible cabin, providing you with assistance at the pier during embarkation, accomodating special meal requirements, and insuring that vehicles with ramps and lifts are available at ports of call.

We also give a quick list of the most accessible ships, however you need to remember that cruise ships (as well as foreign countries) aren’t bound by the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which means that some ships are less accessbile than others. Over the last several years ADA complaint designs and buildings have become quite common, however once you get outside the US you’re likely to run into fewer ramps and other devices commonly used to make public areas more accessible.

Just a reminder, there won’t be a show for the week of October 30 or November 6. We’ll be onboard Vision of the Seas on a working vacation. Expect to see pictures and a review of the ship and itinerary when we return.

You can find the show in iTunes, or head over to the Cruise Planners site to download the show or play it right in your browser and don't forget to check out the Deal of The Week!

Just when you thought it was safe....

BEWARE THE <a href="http://rosebyany.blogspot.com/2006/10/twas-week-before-halloween.html"target="_blank">SOCK NESS MONSTER!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, SEASOCKERS!!!!

Nessie inspired me to make <a href="http://rosebyany.blogspot.com/2006/10/twas-week-before-halloween.html"target="_blank">these for you!

The Mail Buoy Episode 22

I'm not sure why we haven't been talking more about our weekly show over here. As always, if you have questions, let me know --either e-mail me OR call

There is one formal night on our cruise. No one is expecting ballgowns, but if you wish to dress up that would be the night to do it. Also, note that jeans, tank tops, and swim wear will not be acceptable dress at dinner, even on casual nights.

If you NOT flying home from Vancouver, you currently will not need a passport to travel on this cruise. However, I have to say, I still recommend one anyway.

I am going to be out of town beginning October 27th. I have someone covering the phones in my office, but e-mails will be waiting for me when I return. If you have anything urgent, please call -- Gail is helping me out and she's wonderful. I will get back to you when I return.

I do a podcast everyweek? It is on cruising and destinations, but I thought you guys might be a little interested in it. We are full. We have sold every SINGLE cabin Royal Caribbean has given us to sell. We have one LARGE group of knitters. And since I've spoken to most of you on the phone, I know which cabins are the party cabins and who the "serious" knitters are.

We are now currently sold out! Wow. You guys are amazing! And thank you all for helping me with the computer conversion. I'm almost through all of your corrections (I took the holiday weekend off to spend time with the family). Since I was split on if champange or cookies appealed more -- you are all getting BOTH. Hey, what is better than drinks AND cookies? But, I hereby announce I'm not responsible for any dropped stitches or mis-crossed cables because of sugar highs or champagne buzzes. Ok? Glad we all understand.

Back to being SOLD OUT. Here's the thing, I'm not one who wants anyone to miss out if they want to join us. So, I spoke to my friends at Royal Caribbean. Provided I begin a wait list TODAY and run it for a month and one month only, they are willing to work on a first come - first serve basis to get as many folks on the ship as possible. (Basically, I get one shot to tell them how many more cabins we need and I can not be high or low in this count.) But as with all wait lists, there are no promises -- but Royal Caribbean is going to try to help us. The ship itself is filling up, so if they have the space you will have a cabin.

So, this is going to be how this works. I am taking e-mail requests to be put on the Wait List at seasocks AT Gmail DOT com ---- please note the AT=@ and DOT = . You MUST include in your e-mail, your name, the category cabin you are looking for (inside, outside, balcony), and your phone number. I will e-mail you back with your number on the wait list; if you don't get an e-mail back from me within 24 hours -- bug me, e-mail me again, or call me. I assure you, that before Thanksgiving we will know how deep in the wait list we can go. I hope this makes sense. However, once that last group of cabins is alloted, there will be no more space available.

If you are worried that you made a reservation and don't know if you "REALLY" are with the group. Just e-mail me and I'll confirm. I can say this, if you have seen ANY confirmation e-mail, old system or new system, you are in the group. I've still got a few more confirmations in the new system that I'm working on fixing or getting out. But if you have any questions, I'm happy to help.

Finally, if you happen to be the person who made a reservation online this weekend, it did NOT go through. Please e-mail me directly and I'll take care of you, I just have no information on you and thus can not contact you. Please accept my apologies.

Passports, the Question

Ok, this is complicated, and I'm sorry. If you are confused, feel free to write to Congress as it is all their fault. :)

Here's the deal.

The current rules are that to travel to the Caribbean, Canada, and Mexico you need only a birth ceritificate instead of a passport. However, shortly after September 11th, Congress passed the first law that stated by January 1, 2006 passports would be required for ALL international travel. Late in 2005, the target date was moved a full year out to January 1, 2007. For the past year, I've been telling all clients "Get your passports now, folks."

Then last Friday (late in the day before the break for elections), Congress passed a new bill that changes everything again. (Currently this bill is waiting for President Bush to sign, so it is not 100% official -- but I have serious doubts he'll not sign it.) So the new rules separate air travel from land and sea travel. The basics are you need a passport for all AIR entries into the US from any international location, beginning January 8, 2007. (This means, if you are FLYING home from Vancouver, get your passport NOW.) Currently, sea entries into the US will not need a passport until mid-year 2009 or when State Department gets a new "PassCard" system up and running, whichever comes first. Land entries are not requiring passports until January 1, 2008. This is where it is confusing. IF you are taking the train or bus down to Seattle to fly home (remember those cheaper flights?), you will not (provided Bush signs the bill) need a passport. If you are flying home from Vancouver, you will. If you are Canadian, NONE of this applies to you :)

Short version? Get a passport if you don't have one. They are easy to get, good to have, and you can stop following the moveable dates of the passport rules.

So, how? Go to www.travel.state.gov; print out an application; follow the instructions. Pretty simple right. You'll need 2 passport size photos and $97 for the passport itself. Adult passports are good for 10 years, children's are good for 5.

Anyone else confused?

Invoices and Statements

Have you been missing me? Oh, the places I've been....actually, no. I've had my nose stuck in my computer for about three weeks now. I've completely changed computer systems and the process may drive me to drink --- which does not aid in my goal to reduce errors in my knitting. Thus this is where you come in.

Over the next few hours, I'm working on sending everyone an e-mail. This e-mail contains an attachment which hopefully is the latest version of your Sea Socks Reservation.

Here's the thing. I recently upgraded my software. (Oh the pains of this process -- I promise not to bore you with all the details.) In the process, I tried to make sure that everything transferred correctly, but I fear as this was entirely manually and I'm entirely human, there are errors. These are JUST ERRORS in my system, nothing that would cause a problem to your ACTUAL reservation. However, if we don't catch it now, I am concerned it may cause my final lists to be wrong in the end --- which no one wants, right?

Please when you get your e-mail, take a minute and double check that everything looks right to you. Of particular concern to me is the add-ons (shore excursions, insurance, pre- and post- cruise hotel information, and that it states you are looking for a roommate if you told me you are). If something is wrong, looks odd, or isn't how you'd like it in the final version, please either e-mail me or call. I'd rather iron this all out now and not face any surprises as I shut down my old "system" (which I hesitate to admit may or may not be a series of post-it notes and sheets of paper.)

I appreciate you all helping me proof this new system and your patience in the process. To that end, for helping me out with this little proofing process, I'll add a welcome aboard gift to everyone's stateroom!!! (I'm thinking either cookies or champange --- if you have an opinion, and who doesn't, let me know)

And if you DON'T get an e-mail and are expecting one --- e-mail me or call ASAP. Give it until tomorrow to get through -- there are quite a few of you and one of me --- but still, I make everything right -- just help me know what that is.

I'm Such a Tease...

Well, folks, <a href="http://www.rosebyany.blogspot.com/"target="_blank">I haven't piped in much here on this blog, but I wanted to say I am SO excited about the cruise, and <a href="http://www.mamaespot.com/blog/"target="_blank">Erin and I are cooking up a special treat for the rest of you who just can't wait!

Even Her Royal Highness Patricia doesn't know about it, but be sure to look back here a week or two before Halloween (there's one hint... need another? However, I was recently in my yarn store, Marin Fiber Arts, and saw something PERFECT for our cruise. Has anyone else seen the Karabella Boise (50% Cashmere, 50% Merino) Shawl pattern? Wait, here's the photo:

This is my friend from Belly Knitter modeling the shawl. I wish the internet was advanced enough to let you touch this -- I'm telling you, it is so soft, you are going to be petting me.

Ok, so this little lightbulb went off in my head, since I have NOTHING to knit (I lie, I'm serious this is a horrible, horrible lie -- let's look away from the sock yarn, please.) Let's do a knit along. I have three SeaSock folks in my knit night (plus really cool other people) who are all going to be doing the shawl with us. There are a ton of colors. Who wants to join us?

Oh, wait -- there's a deal. Warren has offered a buy 5 balls get the 6th free (or as we like to say -- the first ball is free, kinda like the drugs we all know yarn to be). So, if you want to join us, we are beginning this Thursday -- but you can begin when you get the yarn. If you call Warren he'll ship and include the pattern!!!

And bonus plan, if you have your own -- you might not have to pet me ;)

Oh, did you want SeaSocks news? Well, I have a little tidbit. Warren is also willing to ship purchases home if you don't want to carry them back on board the ship.

Did someone say FREE?

Oh, I think I might have.

We at SeaSocks Central have very good friends in the San Francisco Bay area. The kind owner of Marin Fiber Arts has invited each and everyone of us to come for a visit while we are in town. In order to make this all possible, Warren is kindly sponsoring a bus for us to come to his shop. In addition, he is hosting a trunk show for Nature's Palette Yarns.

UPDATE: I got this awesome call from Warren, the owner of Marin Fiber Arts, it seems that in addition to Nature's Palette having a trunk show at his shop on May 1st. (Aunty Nin, who keeps me in line with dates -- did I get this one right?:)) Kirsten Muench, owner of Muench Yarns, is personally doing a trunk show TOO. Ok, two trunk shows, a yarn store full of yarn, and a bus -- does it get any better than this?

Now, I'm in the processing of reserving the bus and I need to get an idea of how many of you may be interested. This would be a tour from about 9am to 3pm, which would preclude doing the tours of San Francisco. However, I promise to be most entertaining on the bus (to the point you'll feel like you've "been there" -- I kid. But you'll let me practice my next profession of being a tour guide in the process). I know some are traveling with families and there is no requirement to come on this yarn crawl excursion. Like I said, I just need an idea of how large a bus to contract for.

Shore Excursion Updates

I know you are all shocked that this is a multi-update week, but let me tell you that I've got more coming. I'm also working on a big announcement about the San Francisco stop which I hope to get out this week. However, I do have a few little updates about the Victoria and the Vancouver tours.

I should note that I have just e-mailed every confirmation I have for all the excursions currently booked. If you are watching this space and thinking, did she get my tour request and you don't see an e-mail from me by tonight, please e-mail me or call and let me know.

In checking on the numbers, we have officially filled the Tea Tour! Yes, in Victoria the only tour left is the Garden tour and it is currently half full. I will try to get some more space opened up, but that is a little of a long shot. If you are HORRIBLY disappointed, please let me know and I'll see what I can do.

HOTEL in LA NEWS: In seconds after hitting "post" I got the call. The Doubletree hotel in San Pedro is offering us for the night of 4/28/07, a $129 rate to include shuttle to the pier in the morning and for those of you with a car 7 days of FREE parking. This will allow the LA folks to park until they fly home from Vancouver or Seattle. While the hotel does not have a shuttle from the airport, I was told that Super Shuttle is $15 per person to the hotel. If you want to book this deal, call or e-mail me. Now, I need 8 rooms to hold this deal, which I frankly don't think is going to be problem -- so, I'm forced to ask the important question, dinner?

Looking forward to more updates. Stay tuned, please.

In the way of an update

I know it has been a bit and frankly I don't have much in the way of news -- other than I've been working really hard. Here's what I've got right this second.

Shore Excursion confirmations are going out in the mail tomorrow.

Cruise Confirmations for my Canada folks are going back out again tomorrow -- long story, but let's leave it as I'm US Postal Challenged -- and I've ordered UPS international stuff for your documents!!

We have MORE sponsors. Our friends at Blue Moon Fiber Arts are pitching in some prizes -- let me just note that I got the sweetest note from them and sorrow that they can't join us. In addition, yesterday, I heard from one of our newest additions, the heart behind Stitches from the Heart that she will be donating some items to us to help raise awareness of her charity. I'm going to say, go to this site and read some -- I still have a few tears.

And finally, I'm waiting on some information from a hotel in LA that does Park and Cruise (for you LA folks) and shuttles to the pier. I'm working with them on a deal for the night before the cruise, this way if you come in the night before you can get to the ship EARLY! Details will follow -- but if you shoot me an e-mail or a comment letting me know if you are interested or have made the flights to do this -- it will help me talk to the manager to let him know how many to plan for. (LA folks, this would completely help with any traffic concerns you would have on a SUNDAY morning -- not that I'm saying LA has traffic ;) [Thanks to AuntyNin for pointing out I'm not reading a calendar well. I was so excited over finding a hotel close with a manager to help me -- I forgot it was Sunday.]

So, things progress here in SeaSocks Central. In case you were wondering we have NINE cabins left. That's it. As of right now, I don't have any more. If they sell out, I may be able to get a few more from Royal Caribbean, but we may be close to selling through the cabins. In case you were counting, this is DOUBLE my original expectations!! You guys are amazing.

Oh my, We Have Sponsors

Yesterday afternoon, I had the joy of meeting Matt (the COO) and Sam (Account Manager) from Unicorn Books. Now, you may not know who Unicorn Books is, but I'm willing to bet you have some thing from them. Do you happen to have (or have heard of) the Not Just Socks books? Yep, that's Unicorn. Do you own Meilenweit Sock Yarn? Yep, Unicorn is the sole distributor of Lana Grossa in the US. And to top it off, Sam and Matt are truly great guys -- even if they don't knit themselves (Yes, I asked).
Anyway, they have kindly agreed to put stuff in each on of your goody bags. While I'm not at liberty to tell you exactly what (you are going to have to trust me that it is good and something I'm thrilled about), I will assure you that Unicorn's support is a major positive push for our cruise. They could not be more supportive of this cruise; they could not be more excited for this cruise; and I'm hoping that with a little encouragement we could get these guys to come join us. Afterall, wouldn't you want the ear of a yarn company AND book distributor for 5 days?
Oh, and one thing I will tell you -- just in case someone has started to pack yet -- the fine guys at Unicorn are GIVING us some ball winders and shifts so that we can knit Mama E's Yarn on the ship without cussing about having to wind by hand. No, there will not be one for everyone in your goodie bag -- but I think it is worth a huge thank you!!
In case you wanted to know more about Unicorn, here's their marketing blurb:

Unicorn Books & Crafts has been family owned and operated since 1978 in
Petaluma, California. Specializing in needlework and textile books, they stock
over 3,000 titles from all publishers, as well as self published titles you can
not find anywhere else.
You may also be interested to know that Unicorn Books & Crafts is the exclusive US importer for Lana Grossa yarn. Most well known in this country for their self patterning Meilenweit sock yarn, they also stock a wide range of Lana Grossa luxury hand knitting yarns. From basics to fashionable novelties they offer something for everyone, including stylish pattern support.
Additionally Unicorn Books & Crafts is your largest source for the best in textile winding equipment. They carry a variety of shifts and winders as well as recently adding a line of bamboo needles and notions. Their goal is to be a complete one-stop shopping source for the best in all textile related products.
Now, the next amazing piece of news is that Beehive Wool Shop is showing the love too. I am thrilled to announce that anyone going on EITHER of the Victoria shore excursions will get a Beehive Wool Shop Goody Bag. (Hello, can we have too many goody bags of knitting fun??) I'm not even sure myself what will be in it, but I can tell you that Canadian Sock knitter Katherine Foster will also be at the shop for a short talk and everyone will be helping you find those great Canadian yarns -- read Fleece Artist.

And finally, the list would be incomplete without sharing two more companies who are supporting us. When we nail down exactly how, trust me I will share. However, I have firm committments from both Crystal Palace Yarns and Marin Fiber Arts to be a part of this cruise adventure.

Just a final sidenote everyone, I just want to let everyone know that this whole sock knitting cruise idea started because I love to knit socks and I happen to be a cruise planner. My heart is truly warmed by talking to each of you thus far. I know that over the upcoming months will only make my love for you grow. However, (I almost said "never in my wildest dreams" which isn't true -- my dreams are fairly wild, but let's leave it as...) I'm thrilled with the outpouring of support from both you the knitter and the yarn companies, yarn shops, and writers/teachers/designers. Without exception, when I have talked to anyone about this cruise, I've been met with nothing but awesome support and even better ideas. I say all of this as a way of thanks, but also to kindly suggest supporting our sponsors. I've added links to them all on the left, please click, shop, and learn.

As always, I'm here if you need me for anything -- might I suggest a small cruise as a warm up ;)

Yes, we have some excursions

I am PLEASED to announce that after much work on the details, we have choices for excursions for you. Since my last post, I've gotten information about the excursions I've been working on. However, before I announce your options, I need your opinions. This is NOT a commitment, just a poll for an opinion.

Two simple questions, mostly cause I need a head count:

How many of you would be interested in extending your stay in Vancouver by two nights? Other than YARN, would you be interested in a tour or being on your own?

If you are seeking to save some money, one of the ways is to fly from Seattle instead of Vancouver. If I pulled a tour together of some of Vancouver and the trip to Seattle (plan that this would put you in late enough to take a red-eye home if you are on the east coast), are you interested? Would you prefer if it included a night in a hotel in Seattle so you could take an AM flight?

Ok, that was more like four simple questions. If neither of these ideas appeals, let me know what might or if you plan to fly out on Friday without really stopping in Vancouver or Seattle.

This will help me tell the folks doing the planning how many to plan for and possibly share a target price range.

Asking a lot aren't I?

Life is in the Details

Happy Monday all.
I can see from Amy's ticker, we are fast approaching the 9 and a half month mark. I know that I'm in some state between "April is NEVER going to be here" and "Oh, my, I don't have ANY time left." Trust me -- it is probably best that no one sees both these thoughts cross my mind at the same time.

There's a wee bit of news:
The first news is that my company has started a podcast. We are hoping to do weekly updates on all the group cruises, so feel free to check us out here. What is posted is our first podcast, so, please be kind and gentle -- know it can only get better.

In other news, as of right this second, I have in the mail all the confirmations for anyone who has booked thus far!! This is pretty major since all total there are something close to 50 of us. If you do not have in your own hand a copy of your confirmation by Friday of this week, and you just KNOW you booked a cabin, please let me know. To my few friends in Canada, please give it a little longer -- but they are on their way too.

If you would like some flyers to take to your own personal knit nights (what ever your group calls them), shoot me an e-mail; tell me how many you need and an address to send them to. I will be thrilled to send them on their way to you.

Finally, I must remind everyone of the passport issue. As of 12/31/2006, you MUST have a passport to enter Mexico, the Caribbean, and (of importance to us) Canada. It is key that you also have 6 months at least remaining before the passport expires. So, if your passport is set to expire in June '07, please renew it a bit early so you won't face any issues in Canada. This is the rule as of today, it is subject to change; but a small piece of advice, go on and get your passport now -- avoid the stress -- plus when you see that awesome deal to go to Europe for more yarn -- you could leave on a moment's notice! This site will help you walk through the details.

Back to the fun. We will have a great time on board the ship. We will learn so much from Amy, Eunny, and Erin. I can't wait for April and I look forward to meeting you all.

Being Scooped and Scooping...

Hello all. I'm *SO* sorry I've been gone too long. I just got back from a whirlwind trip to Seattle and Victoria, BC. First, I happen to love Seattle and did much shopping while I was there.

But as part of my little trip, I was working for our Sea Socks Cruise. I took the Victoria Clipper up to Victoria for an overnight stay. Let me say that scouting out Victoria is one of the "hardships" of my job that I'm willing to endure. ;) Ok, so not so much a hardship and a complete joy. I accomplish two very important tasks that I think you might be interested in. First, I spoke to the fine folks at BeeHive Wool Shop about hosting us while we are there. Details will be forthcoming, but let me say they are thrilled that each and everyone of us is coming. I scouted out the Fleece Artist yarn too -- and let me tell you I only refrained from rolling around in it because I had already told the shop owners who I was. :D

The second thing I was able to do is start working with a company to build exclusive shore excursions for us. I have two companies who will be in a bidding war over our business, so may best package win!!

So that's my scoop. But did you hear, I got scooped AGAIN? Yep, Mama E announced it, but Eunny Jang will be joining our adventure. But she's isn't just joining us -- she will be one of our teachers and will share with us all sorts of things. I'm hoping if I knit near her, my stitches will improve. I'm delighted that she's joining us. If you don't know, she will have a book out later next year -- so this is your chance to meet her before she tours the world!!

Quick Update

It's been a little quiet up here for the last few days, so I just wanted to make a quick post to let you all know that things are progressing behind the scenes...

Patricia may be out of town right now, but that doesn't mean she isn't working! She spent Wednesday scouting out Victoria BC and talking with some folks up there about some special activities for you. The discussions have been promising and as soon as the details are worked out we'll get them posted here... Let me just say that she's very excited about what is being worked on for Victoria....

Unfortunately with her side trip to Canada she was out of touch for about 24 hours... If you tried calling or e-mailing on either Wednesday or Thursday she did get your message and is working her way through them. You should get a phone call or e-mail response by this evening... If by this evening nobody's gotten back to you, send me an e-mail at michael@REMOVETHISmycruiseplanner.info and I'll help you out...

More News...

Do you know how many times a day I've been saying, I can't wait until April. While I only have a few thousand things to do between now and then, I want a time machine to get it here faster!!

So, I have a few small bits of news:
Cabins: inventory has been updated on the registration site. Sorry it was flaky this weekend, but it is back. Thank you for understanding.

Documentation: In case you were wondering, this cruise does go into Canada and you will be expected to hold a Passport before boarding the ship. This is a new rule from the State Department that goes into effect on 12/31/2006. Also, when double checking that your passport is still valid, make sure that in April you will have at least 6 months before it expires. You will be denied boarding without proper documentation, so please go on and start the process to get a passport.

Confirmations on your cabins: If you have not gotten a confirmation from me and you believe that you registered online, though e-mail and or in the mail, please e-mail me at seasocks@REMOVETHISgmail.com to make sure. With the site issues this weekend, I am highly concerned. This will be a personal e-mail with an attachment of a confirmation. I don't want anything to fall through the technology cracks.

Finally, I am going on a bit of a scouting trip for the rest of this week for our cruise. I will have access to e-mail and will be checking in a lot. Please don't hesitate to e-mail me if you need anything. I just wanted to let you know that I'm not going to be right by the phone, but leave me a message or an e-mail and I'll get back to you quickly.

Hi all

I'm Beth, Teresa's best friend, or one of 'em. One of my best friends, Beth and I will be going on the cruise. Neither of us have been on a cruise, so this should be lots of fun and we will also be doing what we like to do most...knit. Now Beth is a sock goddess and is truly obsessed with it. Me on the other hand, my obsession is lace knitting and I'm currently working on an Orenburg Lace stole. I have spoken to Royal Caribbean and they just doubled our original cabin allotment. However, timing being what it was, I could not get the inventory into the online system this evening. So, if you are looking for an inside cabin, e-mail me at seasocks@REMOVETHISgmail.com.
There is ONE Category I - Outside cabin left as of this writing. There are category G's for the outside coming available.

Please understand that we are pushing through our held inventory faster than Royal Caribbean or I expected, so we are getting more cabins every single day. If you want something specific, please let me know and I will handle it for you.

This is outstanding news and makes this cruise more and more exciting. Royal Caribbean estimates it to be about a 1 hour transit time from LAX to the port. LAX is served by most major domestic and itnernational airlines.

Currently the cruise line only offers transfers to the port from LAX.

There are two other alternate airports to consider as well.

Long Beach Airport (LGB) is aproximately 15 miles away from the port,
currenlty only JetBlue, Alaska Airlines, AmericaWest/USAir, and Delta offer service to LGB. Royal Caribbean does not offer transfers from LGB!

Bob Hope Airport also known as the Burbank Pasadena Airport (BUR) is approximately 40 miles away from the pier. Currently Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, America West, Delta, JetBlue, SouthWest, and United offer service to BUR. As with LGB, Royal Caribbean does not offer transfers from BUR!

No matter which airport you choose to fly into, we recommend that you arrive in LA the day before departure if at all possible. This allows you to unwind and relax a little before you get on to the ship. It also gives you a nice cushion should you encounter flight delays enroute, and should the airline misplace your bag in transit, arriving the day before gives your bag plenty of time to catch up to you prior to embarkation.

If you can't arrive the day before embarkation we recommend you schedule your arrival in LA as early as possible but no later than 12 noon for LAX or LGB arrivals, and 10 AM for arrivals into BUR. We do not recommend flying into Ontario, Orange County or any other airport in the greater Los Angeles area unless you can arrive the day before embarkation and are willing to arrainge your own transfers to the port.

As of this moment, if you choose to fly into either Long Beach (LGB) or Bob Hope (BUR) you would be responsible for finding your own way to the pier... However, if there at at least 15 people considering flying in to either of these two airports and they coordinate their schedules with each other and us, we will arrange a transfer for you. Just as if you were purchasing the bus transfer from LAX to the port, there would still be an added charge.

By rail, The Port of Los Angeles - San Pedro has Amtrak California Bus service from the San Pedro Thruway Bus Stop at the Catalina Terminal located at Berth 95. There is a free shuttle bus from World Cruise Center. This station is unstaffed and there is no ticket, baggage or package express services. This bus service can be used to connect with nationwide Amtrak service at the Los Angeles Union Station.

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is the only option for flights out of Vancouver. YVR is served by most major US domestic and international airlines, however no US low cost airline (JetBlue, Southwest, AirTran etc...) offer service from YVR.

Bus transfers are available from the cruise line to Vancouver International, and Royal Caribbean also offers their Onboard Check-In and Luggage Valet service. The service which will run $10 to $20 per passenger will allow you to check in for your flight and check your bags for your flight... before you disembark the ship! This means you won't have to haul your luggage from the ship to the airport and then have to wait at the airport to check in... All of this will be handled for you by the cruise line. That means that you'll disembark with your carry-on luggage, head to the airport and go directly to security. You don't even have to go directly to the airport, instead you spend a few hours shopping in the city before you go to the airport.

In order to allow for enough time for the ship to clear immigration and customs and for you to make it to the airport, we recommend that you schedule your departure from Vancouver no earlier than 12 noon.

By rail... Amtrak offers service from the Pacific Central Station in Vancouver. From there you can take Amtrak's Cascades down to Seattle WA or Portland OR where you can connect to Amtrak's services to the rest of the United States. While this trip is incredibly scenic and a fantastic way to end your cruise, transfers are not available from the cruise line to Pacific Central station.

AHEM: I have an announcement

I would have loved to have said, you see it here first, but as is her right, Miss Amie broke the new on her very own blog. You see we now have yet another fabulous person announcing their joining our little cruise. But Amie isn't just any fabulous knitter, oh, no. Amie is THE designer behind the sock patterns that will be in your goody bags with YARN!!! I happen to have it on VERY good authority that there isn't just one pattern for Mama E's delicious yarn either --- BONUS patterns, I tell you the goodness doesn't end.
Also, Amie is kind enough to teach a few of the workshops too. I have to say, I'm beyond thrilled to have the woman behind 2000 socks in 2006 (which I believe she already met her goal) on board. But you know what makes her a little bit MORE special. Yup, you saw it on her blog too didn't you --- a TICKER!! Counting down the days til the cruise. I best get packing. Teehee. Actually I think I'm going to make a goal for myself to wear socks I knit between now and the cruise ---- so if you see me with one sock or mis-matched socks, you'll know why!
Thanks Amie -- I can't wait to learn!

Want to Save a few Pennies??

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up, as of the writting of this post, there are exactly 6 oceanview cabins left at the current price of $550. I want you to be aware that once these 6 are gone, the price will probably go up by about $50 per person. So, if you wanted to go, I'd suggest that booking now will save you some money over waiting.
Keep in mind the deposit per cabin is only $200. You don't have to pay anything else until February 1st!!!

FAQ - Read THIS Post!!!

I've already had a few questions and I thought we needed a FAQ. I am going to put this post's link on the side bar shortly, so we can add to it as needed. This far, though I have answers to the various questions:

Will you find me a roommate?

Yes and No. Yes, I will be thrilled to maintain a list of folks seeking roommates with a few of the basics (gender and age range -- no exact ages, promise, and cabin preference). However, I'd prefer that you e-mail or reach out to these people and see who might work the best for you. If you want a room to yourself, that is possible and there is a single supplement for it -- but there will be a roommate list to work through. If you need any special help with this, please call or e-mail me.

Should I bring the family?

Oh yes, if you wish. I should tell you that as of this writing Mama E is bringing hers. If you need a triple or quad cabin (or even require two cabins that a join), please call me for pricing. These type of cabins go the quickest, so it is important to talk to me now so I can hold you the right space. There is a DISCOUNT for the 3rd and 4th people in a cabin; just in case you want to.

What about airfare? Do I have to do that on my own?

No. If you call me 888-286-9827 or e-mail me where you are flying in from I will help you out. First, we will check with the cruise line. Often they have bought bulk air and will offer a great deal (this is of particular note with the start in LA end in Vancouver thing) including getting you from airport to pier. Then I will help you check the major airlines to see what is the best price. Then it is your choice. However, I do strongly suggest that you get the optional transfers from the airport to piers, so that you won't have to do all of that on your own.

I love Vancouver and want to stay some extra days, how?

Call me. I will help you. If we do air through the cruise lines, I can delay your flight out and book your hotel. If you want to use the Amtrak train to go from Vancouver to Seattle or Portland, I will help you with that too. You let me know what you want and I'll help. :)

Is there a limit to how many can join us?

No, there really isn't a limit; but there are limited cabins available by price -- so to get the best price, book early. It is only $200 to hold your cabin and that is refundable. However, if you wait, the price may go up or there may not be cabins available in what you would prefer. Let me repeat, there is plenty of space on the ship, but if you want the best price per cabin and get the best choice in cabin types, booking earlier is better than waiting.

What documents will I need to go on this trip?

Assuming you are a US citizen, you will need a passport. As of 12/31/2006, the State Department is requiring US citizens to carry passports for travel between Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico. You can get more information on what you need and how to get a passport here. Also, I'd like to suggest that you apply early as I think there might be a bit of a rush at the end of the year. If you are not a US citizen, then you will have to know the rules that apply to you.

Please ask more questions!!!

We're Going on a Sea Sock Cruise

Hello and Welcome to the first sock knitting cruise. This spring we are going up the West Coast from LA to Vancouver onboard Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas.

We are thrilled to have as a yarn guru Mama E of C*EYE*BER Fibers. Let me tell you, this woman is amazing! In addition to making, what I keep calling "edible yarns" (so yummy looking I want to eat them); she is an accomplished knitter, spinner, and wife and mother. I sort of have a little crush on her, which is a good thing, because I think she likes me too. :)

What I'm trying to do with this blog is really about four fold, so feel free to jump in and help out.

I want a place where we can make announcements and keep the information flowing. There are so many of you who are coming that I want to make sure that everyone has great information.

I want to put a human face and voice to this event. This is not a corporate powerhouse here. We are professional folks, but we are knitters (sock knitters even) and have the knitter's best interest at heart.

I want to have YOU the people joining Mama E and me on this cruise to join us, ask questions, post your excitement.

I want to hear from you what you are looking for out of this cruise. I want to try to meet as many needs as humanly possible and I know everyone will have an outstanding time. However, this is YOUR cruise and I want you to help us make it the best afloat.

Finally, if you want to post here, just shoot me an e-mail here. If you want to register for the cruise, please go to this site and sign up.
